Located on an artificial island off Shek Kwu Chau, the first modern waste-to-energy facility for treating municipal solid waste (MSW) in Hong Kong, the Integrated Waste Management Facilities Phase 1 (I·PARK1), has commenced the trial operation since December 2025. Upon full operation, the facility can process 3,000 tonnes of MSW per day and export about 480 million kWh of surplus electricity to the power grid per year, which is enough to power 100 000 households a year.
To improve the quality control and expedite the progress, the main electrical and mechanical equipment modules of I·PARK1 was prefabricated in Zhuhai using the Multi-trade Integrated Mechanical, Electrical and Plumbing (MiMEP) approach. The work comprises six incineration boiler modules and six flue gas treatment modules, with a total weight of about 50,000 tonnes. Each incineration boiler module is about 50 metres in height and weights about 6,000 tonnes. The modules were delivered by the marine transportation and loaded in to the artificial island by the heavy-lift operation which 216 axle-lines of SPMTs (Self-Propelled Modular Transporters) were used together with a semi-submersible barge. With the first giant module arrived in Hong Kong in February 2023, the installation of all modules were completed in 2024 Q1.
